ECDS leadership, students, teachers and friends were called together by the sounds of a conch shell followed by student vocalists singing “We are the World” accompanied by staff and parent musicians and singers. All the singing and celebration brought everyone together in song, clapping and swaying to mark the beginning of the School’s 25th year. The school’s founder made a few comments about how the work of the school, its teachers, families and students has been continually expanding over the years, like the ripples created by a pebble that is thrown into a pond. She pointed out how that expanding circle has had far-reaching effects in the lives of students and their service to others has expanded to the greater community and the world. She asked students to join her as she identified 24 great things to celebrate about the school and asked students to release one dove for each one. Principal Lehmunn released the twenty-fifth dove, and the entire school community welcomed the beginning of the 25th anniversary year and all of the things students, teachers, families and friends will do in the future to make this world a better place, for you and me. Then music and song rang out again as the entire flock was released by the students. There were feathers, flashes of white and circling birds everywhere. It was a great beginning for a great year. Thanks to everyone for participating and making it a memorable occasion.

We had a preview of St. Patrick’s Day at school on Friday, with everyone wearing their spectacular green outfits and Leprachauns running wild on both ECDS campuses. We hope you have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day on Saturday!

Principal’s Message

WIth WASC behind us, the teachers are busy in their classrooms and parents are busy getting ready for Spring Break. I just want to remind all the parents that the SAT-10 testing dates for grades 1-8 will be from Monday, April 16 through Friday, April 27. During this time period, it will be very important for your child to arrive at school on time, as the tests are all done during the first part of the day.

Spring Sport Teams

There will be a meeting after school on Monday, March 19 at the ampitheater for anyone in Grades 4-8 interested in joining the Boy’s Volleyball team, the Girl’s Basketball team, or the Boy’s and Girl’s Track Squad. Games start before Spring Break, so practices will start on March 20. See you there.

— Mr. Lehmunn

Encinitas Blvd. Director Message

Happy St. Patrick’s Day! I don’t know if the children told you but we had a visit from the Leprechauns. The children really enjoyed their fun-filled day of mischief. The next big upcoming event on the calendar to keep in mind will be the Spring Festival on Friday, March 30, which is also the last day of school before Spring Break. We will have daycare available at this campus during the Spring Break week of April 2-6. I hope that everyone has managed to keep up with the time change. Have a great weekend.

Thanks,

— Ms. Safarik

ECDS PTO “Hawk Tawk”

Thanks to everyone who supported our March Dine-Out event by ordering food from the New York on Rye food truck on Thursday! We appreciate your support.

A Family Hoedown Event

The PTO’s annual spring fundraiser “A Family Hoedown” will be on April 28, and we’re asking for your help! This event is our key fundraising benefit event, supporting our year-round activities and providing items for your children’s classrooms. We’re asking our ECDS families to help support this event in the following ways:

Purchase a ticket - tickets will be on sale the week of April 16, or you can visit the ECDS PTO website to purchase tickets.

Become a sponsor - great opportunities for visibility for your business!

Contribute an item for our auction, such as timeshare, tickets, airline miles, gift certificates, service, themed baskets, sports memorabilia, etc.

If you’re interested in helping out, please fill out the Auction Item Donation Form and drop it in the PTO mailbox by April 8. Contact Donna Spiegel, Event chair, at 760-522-9110 or dvspeigel@gmail.com.

This week marked a major milestone for our school, as the WASC Accreditation Team finished their visit and presented their findings to our parents, staff, and students on Wednesday afternoon. Their findings were in a word, amazing. I have never heard a school community described with the types of superlatives that this team used to describe what we have built here together. Parents should pat themselves on the back, as the team was very impressed with our students and how well they treated each other, how much they valued their educational process, and how respectful and understanding they were of each other. They were also very impressed with our unique blend of using Montessori instructional methods with the traditional curriculum overlay. They felt that we had captured the best parts of both styles and even recommended to us that we contact universities that have teacher credentialing programs so they can study what we do at ECDS to see if it can be expanded into other school communities. They were also impressed with the high level of positive involvement by our parents. I would like to thank every part of our school community for everything you all did to make this event go so well, from the parents who have believed in their children and in us and have worked so hard to make the school better, to the staff and teachers who worked so hard over the past three years during this credential process, and especially to our students who we all know are so very special in so very many ways. We all look forward to the next steps we will implement to continue to grow our school, not just in numbers, but also through the changes we will continue to put into place to make our wonderful school even better. The team will be sending us a finalized hard-copy of the report next week, and as soon as we get it, we will make copies and place them in the office for anyone to read.

ECDS Sports Teams

Congratulations to our Boys Soccer team for their excellent showing in winning the regular season and finishing in 2nd place in the end of year tournament. They won their first playoff game on Tuesday in an exciting penalty shoot-out tiebreaker, and they performed very well in a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in the tournament final on Thursday. The Girls Soccer team played well in their playoff game on Tuesday, losing to Horizon Prep’s team in a hard-fought battle. The Boys Basketball team also lost their playoff game on Tuesday, after a valiant effort by this small but determined team. All 3 teams are still young teams with most of the team members returning next year, so we look forward to watching them amaze us next year. We’d also like to thank Coach Bishop (Girls Soccer), Coach Freeman (Boys Basketball), and Coach Piazza (Boys Soccer) for all of their efforts in coaching our winter sports teams this year.

Gift of Life Jog-A-Thon

On Friday, we were treated to seeing our kids at their best as they ran with determined smiles to raise money to help other children in need. It is always so heatwarrming to see our kids at this event helping those unable to help themselves. The kids’ energy at this event is exactly what impressed the visiting Accreditation Team so much this past week, and we look forward to building on it. The results about how much money was pledged at the Jog-A-Thon will be announced as soon as all the pledges are tallied based on the number of laps each student ran. Thanks to Mrs. Shannon Everett and Mrs. Joty Vallandingham for running the Jog-A-Thon again this year, to all the parents who cheered and tallied laps at the Jog-A-Thon, to all the teachers who helped their students make special t-shirts, bandannas, or hats, and most of all, to all of our students who raised so much money towards lifesaving heart operations for 10 children in El Salvador.

— Mr. Lehmunn

Encinitas Blvd. Director Message

Hello Everyone! Can you believe how fast this year has flown by? It’s already time to reset the clock for Daylight Savings Time this Sunday. Next Friday, March 16th will mark our annual St. Patrick’s Day fun-filled day. Also, on Tuesday, March 20, Rada Rabbit will be returning to our campus to educate the children on the importance of eating healthy foods and taking care of your teeth. Spring Festival is coming up at the end of this month on Friday, March 30. Please be sure to ask your child’s teacher for more information regarding times, dates and activities that will be available that day.

Summertime is coming up just around the corner, and it’s usually a busy time for all families. If you are interested in summer programs, please feel free to ask the office at anytime. Also, in case you were not aware, we are available year-round at both Encinitas Country Day School campuses from 7:30am - 6:00pm. Have a great weekend!

— Ms. Safarik

ECDS PTO “Hawk Tawk”

Thanks to everyone who participated in the Jog-A-Thon event on Friday, with special thanks to Shannon Everett and Joty Vallandingham for running the Jog-A-Thon event. It’s always a heartwarming event for our many parent and grandparent volunteers, and you should all be very proud of your children because they ran so many laps on a hot day because they wanted to make a difference in the lives of those 10 children in El Salvador.

March Dine-Out

Our March dine-out event will be on campus featuring the “New York on Rye” Food Truck next Wednesday, March 14 from 3-5 pm. We are excited beacuse New York on Rye is an ECDS family business, owned by Jay Margolin (Dad of Michelle in Mrs. Herriges’ class). You’ll be able to order sandwiches, soup, and other delicious items on their menu, and you’ll be supporting an ECDS family business as well as the PTO because the PTO will receive 15% of all sales. You can find out more at the New York on Rye website .

Spring Hoedown Event

Save the date - our ECDS PTO Spring Hoedown event will be on Saturday, April 28 from 4-7 pm. We’ll have fun for the whole family at our Family-Style Hoedown hosted at our beautiful Manchester Avenue Campus. So, mark those calendars, dust off those cowboy boots, and plan to bring the whole crew! We need volunteers to help with this fun event, and we also need auction items from ECDS family businesses. If you have a business and you would be willing to provide an item for our auction, this is a great way to get exposure for your business to all of our ECDS families. Please contact Donna Spiegel if you can volunteer for the event or if you would be willing to provide an auction item.

Spirit Wear

You can purchase ECDS Spirit Wear for your students at any time through the school year, so your student can show off their ECDS spirit! To see what’s available and place your order, go to the Spirit Wear website. The clothing is produced by a local Encinitas company and the PTO receives a percentage of sales, so you can help your child show their ECDS spirit while supporting our school and a local business.

Principal’s Message

Spring is almost here and the Manchester Ave. campus is looking very nice, especially the lower elementary gardens. Parents of our Kindergartners through second grade have been pulling, cutting, digging and planting the past two weeks and we have some amazing gardens to show for it. Last fall our parent volunteers put in some amazing gardens as well, and I would like to thank ALL the parents who worked so hard this year to give our students these very special places to share and take care of.

WASC

I know that everyone has heard a lot about WASC by now, but next week is the big week. The Accreditation Team will begin meetings on Sunday afternoon with school staff, then it will be the parents turn on Monday at 9 am in the library. The kids will meet with the team on Tuesday morning, and on Wednesday afternoon the Accreditation Team will read their report to the assembled staff at 3:30 in the Library. In between, the team will be observing classrooms, talking with assorted teachers and staff, and working together to write their report. These team members come from schools in southern California and give up four days at their own schools to be with us and help us become a better school. We are very thankful to them for their time, efforts, and helpful input.

Winter Sports Teams

Congratulations to our Girl’s Soccer team for winning against Grauer 3-0 this week. These young ladies have worked very hard this year and don’t be surprised if they pull off a big upset during next week’s tournament. The very young Boy’s Basketball team has shown a lot of progress and a “never say die” attitude, and their hard work this year will pay off in future years as they mature. The Boy’s Soccer team had a huge victory yesterday in a 6-1 win over Grauer, and they are currently tied for first place in their league heading into next week’s tournament. We’re very proud of all three teams.

GO, RED TAILED HAWKS!

— Mr. Lehmunn

Encinitas Blvd. Director Message

Happy Friday once again! The children are getting excited about the new month of March. It is a busy month indeed, filled with many upcoming events. St. Patrick’s Day is right around the corner. Rada Rabbit will be coming back to visit the children and talk about the importance of brushing your teeth and eating healthy foods on Tuesday, March 20. The Dance Recital will be Friday, March 23 at 9:30 am on the stage at the upper playground. We will be having a Spring Festival on Friday, March 30. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please talk with your child’s teacher. Also, a friendly reminder that we spring forward our clocks on Sunday, March 11. For those parents deciding where to send your child for Kindergarten, I would encourage you to schedule a tour of the Manchester Ave. campus. Happy March and have a great weekend.

Thanks,

Jog-A-Thon

The annual ECDS Jog-A-Thon is next Friday, March 9. This is the biggest service project of the year for students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade, benefitting the “Gift of Life” charity which will be providing lifesaving heart operations for 10 children in El Salvador. You and your children can see photos of these 10 children on posters in the Library. All parents received the Jog-a-thon Announcement Letter in your mailbox, as well as a Jog-A-Thon Pledge Sponsor Sheet for each child. Please help your children collect pledges from family and friends. The pledges can be an amount per lap or a flat pledge. This is truly a heartwarming event, so make plans to volunteer for your child’s classroom that day if you’re available. The Jog-A-Thon Schedule is taped to each classroom’s door, and you can sign up on the signup sheet next to it. Each classroom needs 2-3 volunteers to help. You don’t need to be there the whole day - just plan to be at the school 15-30 minutes before your child’s class starts and leave 30 minutes after your child’s class ends their Jog-A-Thon run. Contact Shannon Everett, the Jog-a-thon Chair, if you have any questions about the Jog-A-Thon.

March Dine-Out

Mark your calendars for Wednesday, March 14 for our next dine-out event. We’re excited that we’ll be featuring an ECDS family business named “New York on Rye”, owned by Jay Margolin (Dad of Michelle in Mrs. Herriges’ class). They will be parking a Food Truck on the campus where you’ll be able to order sandwiches, soup, and other delicious items on their menu. Check out the New York on Rye website to see their entire menu and find out where their food truck will be parked until then.
Principal’s Message

I want to encourage everyone to come to this Sunday’s Open House from 1-4 PM, and bring along a friend. I know that you have all received a flyer in your boxes describing all the events that will be going on that afternoon, and it is a great chance to have your child show off their classroom to you and chat with your current teacher. In addition, this is a great opportunity to go to your child’s next year’s grade teachers and talk to them face to face. At this time of year, a lot of chatter is going on about this teacher or that, or rumors about what is or isn’t taught at different grade levels, but nothing takes the place of going to the teachers and looking them in the eye and getting information about next year first-hand.

WASC

March 4 is rapidly approaching, which is the beginning of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation team visit. WASC is the highest level of accreditation a school can achieve, and a term of accreditation from this group stamps your child’s education with a high degree of credibility when your child moves on to another school. On Monday, March 5 at 9 AM in the Library, the accreditation team would like to talk to parents about their experiences at the school. We invite any parent to attend and let your voice be heard. The team will be on campus until the end of the school day Wednesday, and they will be talking to students, visiting classrooms, talking to teachers and staff, and writing their report to the WASC Central Committee while they are here. Parents and students are also invited to the Library at 3:30 on Wednesday to hear a summary of the team’s report. Final word on the team’s recommendation will be sent to us after the Central Committee meets in June.

Library Closure

Due to the WASC team’s visit and the need to provide them with a quiet, confidential place to write their report and meet with the various groups, the Library will be closed for use from Monday, March 5 until after the team reads their report to us on Wednesday afternoon, March 7.

— Mr. Lehmunn

Encinitas Blvd. Director Message

Welcome Back Everyone! We hope you all managed to take advantage of the four day weekend. February is almost over, if you can believe that. This year has flown by so quickly, and it has been a pure joy to watch the children grow up so fast. There are only four more months of school left, and summer is just around the corner. Hopefully, those of you who have children graduating have checked out the Manchester Ave. campus. If you have not, I would definitely recommend visiting that campus during their Open House on Sunday afternoon from 1-4 p.m. The teachers will all be in their classrooms that day so you will be able to get a good feel for what life is like at that campus.

Oral Hygiene

Rada the Rabbit will be visiting our school on Monday, February 27, to show all the children the importance of dental hygiene and eating healthy foods. It is always a great time when he teaches us to brush our teeth and have a healthy smile. Also, even though the sun has been out, it is still quite chilly in the mornings and late afternoons so please remember to pack something warm for your child to wear. Have a great weekend.

— Ms. Safarik

From the Manchester Office

Admission Agreements

The Admission Agreements for the 2012-2013 school year are available to be signed. Parents, please stop by the front desk to sign your agreement and complete your student’s enrollment. You may stop at the desk any time between 7:30am and 4:00pm on any day.

Lost & Found

Please check the Lost & Found rack for any of your child’s belongings. The rack is located by the back door of the office. Everything that is left in Lost & Found will be donated next Friday, March 2.

ECDS PTO “Hawk Tawk”

Stop by our PTO Lounge at the Open House on Sunday, to chat with some of the PTO Board members and other parents! We also welcome you to attend our Open Forum PTO meeting next Tuesday Feb. 28 at 9:00 in the Library. Every parent is a member of our PTO, and we’d like to talk with you about your experiences at ECDS and how we can make our PTO the best it can be.

Kids Korps - Food Bank Event

Our third ECDS Kids Korps service project this year is at the San Diego Food Bank next Saturday, March 3, 2012 from 9:00-11:30 am. Thank you for your participation in ECDS Kids Korps Chapter.

Jog-A-Thon

The annual ECDS Jog-A-Thon is coming up on Friday, March 9. This is the biggest service project of the year for students in Kindergarten through 8th Grade, benefitting the “Gift of Life” charity which will be providing lifesaving heart operations for 10 children in El Salvador. Please help your children collect pledges from family and friends, and the pledges can be an amount per lap or a flat pledge.
