The annual ECDS Jog-A-Thon is on Friday, March 8. This is the biggest service project of the year for ECDS students in Grades K-8, benefiting the “Gift of Life” charity and providing lifesaving heart operations. Parent or grandparent volunteers will be needed, and they must be at the school for 20 minutes before the classroom’s scheduled track time and plan to leave 15 minutes after their class is done. We also need parents to help your children collect pledges from family and friends.

ECDS leadership, students, teachers and friends were called together by the sounds of a conch shell followed by student vocalists singing “We are the World” accompanied by staff and parent musicians and singers. All the singing and celebration brought everyone together in song, clapping and swaying to mark the beginning of the School’s 25th year. The school’s founder made a few comments about how the work of the school, its teachers, families and students has been continually expanding over the years, like the ripples created by a pebble that is thrown into a pond. She pointed out how that expanding circle has had far-reaching effects in the lives of students and their service to others has expanded to the greater community and the world. She asked students to join her as she identified 24 great things to celebrate about the school and asked students to release one dove for each one. Principal Lehmunn released the twenty-fifth dove, and the entire school community welcomed the beginning of the 25th anniversary year and all of the things students, teachers, families and friends will do in the future to make this world a better place, for you and me. Then music and song rang out again as the entire flock was released by the students. There were feathers, flashes of white and circling birds everywhere. It was a great beginning for a great year. Thanks to everyone for participating and making it a memorable occasion.

Join our environmental biologist Cindy Daverin for a family hike of the conservation trail loop. Learn about local riparian and upland habitats. Collect and examine water samples taken from our on-campus seasonal stream and identify native plants and animals that live right on our campus. Sign up for hikes that begin from the central promenade booth every half hour during the open house.

This Sunday’s Open House is a great way to see what ECDS students have been doing this year. The afternoon event includes Campus Tours, Opportunities to meet teachers, Student Performances, a Middle School Science Fair, and a Student Art Show. Bring a friend and join us for Arts & Crafts, Family Fun, Hikes and more.

Encinitas Country Day School and Rising Stars will be presenting Schoolhouse Rock Jr. at the Rancho Santa Fe Performing Arts Center this weekend. Tickets are on sale at the school and at the box office before each performance. (January 7th and 14th at 6 p.m. and 8th and 15th at 2 p.m.)

ECDS student, parent and faculty volunteers will be on hand from 10:00-3:00 Sunday, December 11th, to wrap your gift books and spread holiday cheer. Your support will provide local shoppers with free holiday cheer and gift wrap and will also support our school Library. Everyone’s welcome.

First Friday Assembly, Encinitas Holiday Parade and Performing Arts Programs make the holiday season the warmest time of the year at Encinitas Country Day School. Look for details in postings here, and in the school lobby.
