Principal Hayes and selected teachers recently gave parents “A Child’s View” of the unique learning environment students experience in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades at ECDS. Observation, conversation, and hands-on exploration of instructional materials and methods provided parents with insights into this incredible period of growth in their child’s life. When entering first grade, children are often just beginning to move from the concrete world of hands-on exploration into the more abstract world of ideas and imagination. By having each child follow an individualized work plan that reflects their developmental levels and pacing in the early elementary grades, they move beyond simply completing assignments, developing the self-discipline and curiosity that will drive lifelong learning. By the time they leave third grade at ECDS, they will understand not only what they’ve learned, but how to learn.
