Weekly Connections 02/11/2012

Feb 11 / 2012

School will be closed next Friday, Feb. 17 and Monday, Feb. 20 in observance of President’s Day weekend, with no daycare available. We hope you have a wonderful 4-day weekend!

Your kids will have a blast with all the Valentine’s Day fun on Tuesday! Candy Grams can be purchased through Tuesday morning. Your student can buy them for their siblings, friends and teachers, and you can buy them for your kids and teachers/staff as well. Parents from both campuses can bring their Preschool & Kindergarten student to the Cake Walk starting at 2:15, and then the older kids join in when their classes end at 3:00. Middle School students will enjoy their very own “Studio 6-7-8” Cupcake Lounge in a separate area. Don’t forget to bring some money for tickets, face painting, drinks, and the Middle School students will need to bring money to school to purchase yummy cupcakes and drinks at their lounge. Parents – we do need lots of cakes to make the Cake Walk so spectacular, so please plan to bring in a cake on Tuesday morning, and drop it off at the tables outside the office.

Principal’s Message

ECDS Spelling Bee

I want to congratulate all of this year’s finalists in the ECDS Spelling Bee. Each year the skill level gets higher and higher and the competition more heated. All of the finalists received a certificate of commendation at today’s First Friday Assembly to honor their achievement. In Division I, made up of the 2nd and 3rd grade class representatives, Baylor Pond took First Place followed by Rob Shield in Second Place. In Division II, composed of the 4th and 5th grade class representatives, Sofia Lyon was the Champion with Shayna Glazer taking Second Place. In Division III, made up of the class representatives from 6th, 7th, and 8th grades, Connor Oxenhorn was the champion and Dane Hoffman finished in Second Place. Dane will be representing us at the San Diego County Spelling Bee on March 21, as he was the highest scoring 7th or 8th grade student in our bee, and students must be in 7th or 8th grade to go to the San Diego Bee. Everyone worked very hard at the bee, and I know that there are many students out there who are looking to take home one of these championships home next year.

ECDS Open House

Mark your calendars now for the ECDS Spring Open House, which will be on Sunday, February 26 from 1-4 PM. Current and prospective parents are encouraged to attend, so please invite friends and family who might be interested in coming to visit ECDS. Come and talk with the teachers at your child’s next grade level, as part of your decision process of which teacher to request for next year. All the teachers will have classroom projects and artwork displayed in their classrooms. Mrs. Wheeler and Mrs. Daly, our ECDS Art teachers, will display spectacular artwork created by your children in an Art Show in the library. Middle School Science Projects will be displayed in the Science room. We hope everyone will make time in your schedule to come to the school and let your children show off the work they have been doing inside the classroom, as well as in the Performing Arts area.

Encinitas Blvd. Director Message

Happy Friday! Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! I hope you all have wonderful plans to celebrate. The children are looking forward to their parties next week. Hopefully you’ve all had a chance to stop into your child’s classroom and looked to see if there are any goodies you can sign up to bring! As a reminder, Friday Feb. 17 and Monday, Feb. 20 the school will be closed in observance of President’s Day Weekend. As usual the weather has managed to stay consistently sunny. However, please remember to pack a warm item of clothing for your child as it does still get cold and windy even with the sunshine!

Valentine’s Day

We still need some parent or grandparent volunteers to help with the Valentine’s Day Cake Walk on Tuesday. We need help with Setup starting at about 1:00 PM, during the event from 2:15-4:00 PM, and with Cleanup after the event. It’s a really fun event to volunteer for, and please contact Betty Jo Billick if you’re able to help. It takes a village and a lot of elbow grease to put on each of these fun events for your children, and it really helps to have lots of volunteers to spread out the workload.

ECDS Cookbook

Please submit your recipes by next Thursday, February 16 for the ECDS Cookbook. We want to see your favorite recipes – give us your own spectacular creation or Grandma’s best recipe from your stash of old family favorites, and be sure to include a little story about what makes it so special to your family! We’d like every family to be part of the cookbook, so send in those recipes now!!

Spring Fundraiser

The PTO typically has a fundraising event in the spring, where we raise money to purchase items for the school. We had a beautiful Sunset Soiree evening event for adults for the last 2 years, and the money raised by these events allowed us to purchase the Awning over the ECDS Amphitheatre. We’d like to have an event on campus this year for parents and students, with a theme that will be fun for everyone. However, to make this event successful, we need a Chairperson and team to run it. If you’re interested in running the spring fundraiser event or participating on the planning team, please email the PTO.
