Weekly Connections 02/18/2012

Feb 18 / 2012

Please plan on attending the ECDS Open House next Sunday, Feb. 26 from 1-4 pm. See more information about the Open House, as well as the upcoming WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) visit to ECDS, in Mr. Lehmunn’s message this week. Don’t forget to take a few minutes over this long weekend to send in your recipes for the ECDS Cookbook (see more information in the PTO message below).

Principal’s Message

There are two important events coming the school’s way over the next two weeks. The first is the ECDS Open House on Sunday, Feb. 26 from 1-4 pm. This is a great chance to see what your child has been doing in their classroom for the past several months, as well as an opportunity to talk with the teachers at your child’s next grade level. In addition, there will be an Art Show in the Library, Science Fair projects from grades 6-8 on display in the Science room and the Art room, and performances in the amphitheater.

WASC Visit

Starting on Sunday, March 4, we will host a four person team representing the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). These individuals will be evaluating our school for accreditation. This is important to both the school’s future and the future of your child’s education. As your child eventually moves to another school, attending a WASC-accredited school brings instant respect and credibility to their educational status. I want to invite parents to attend a meeting with the WASC Committee on Monday, March 4 at 9 am in the Library. This will be your chance to talk to the committee about your child’s experience and help us with this process. None of the school’s staff will be present at this meeting, because this meeting is only for parents. In addition, on Tuesday, March 6 at 9:30 am, the committee will be talking with two students from each classroom from Kindergarten to 8th grade, where they will again be getting information directly from the students about their educational experience without any ECDS staff present. I would like to thank those parents attending in advance for your help with this process. We have been working on this WASC accreditation process for over four years, and we will be very happy to see this part of the process completed successfully.

Encinitas Blvd. Director Message

Happy Thursday everyone! I hope that you all had a wonderful Valentine’s Day. All the children enjoyed the Valentine’s Day class parties. Thank you for all of your help in bringing in goodies and helping the children prepare Valentine’s for each other. The school was filled with lots of love this week!

President’s Day Weekend

One last friendly reminder to everyone that we will be closed in observance of President’s Day on Friday Feb. 17 and on Monday, Feb. 20. We hope you all are able to recharge your batteries. School will resume as usual Tuesday, Feb. 21. Enjoy your weekend!

Valentine’s Day

There were a lot of happy ECDS students at our Cake Walk and Middle School Cupcake Lounge events on Valentine’s Day. We’d like to thank event chairs Betty Jo Billick, Susan Bachand-Morone and Zina Geyser, as well as all of the hardworking volunteers who helped with the event. Many thanks to everyone who brought in the beautifully decorated cakes, cupcakes and cookies that made our cake table so spectacular! We’d also like to thank Mr. Lehmunn and the Middle School students for all of their hard work on the Candy Gram sales, because everyone enjoyed giving and receiving Candy Grams on Valentine’s Day.

ECDS Cookbook

Please take a few minutes over this long holiday weekend to submit your recipes for the ECDS Cookbook through email by Tuesday, February 21. The flyer has complete details on how to submit your recipe. We want to see your favorite recipes – give us your own spectacular creation or Grandma’s best recipe from your stash of old family favorites, and be sure to include a little story about what makes it so special to your family! We’d like every family to be part of the cookbook, so send in those recipes now!!

Jog-A-Thon

The annual ECDS Jog-A-Thon will take place on Friday, March 9. Information will be going into parent mailboxes soon and a sign-up sheet for classroom parent volunteers will be posted in each classroom. Each class will need at least 2 parents per classroom to help get the kids ready, cheer them on, and organize anything pertaining to each classroom’s Jog-A-Thon run. For any Jog-A-Thon questions, please contact Shannon Everett.

Spring Fundraiser

The PTO typically has a fundraising event in the spring, where we raise money to purchase items for the school. We had a beautiful Sunset Soiree evening event for adults for the last 2 years, and the money raised by these events allowed us to purchase the Awning over the ECDS Amphitheatre. We’d like to have an event on campus this year for parents and students, with a theme that will be fun for everyone. However, to make this event successful, we need a Chairperson and team to run it. If you’re interested in running the spring fundraiser event or participating on the planning team, please email the PTO.
