Lower School (K-4th Grade) physical education classes include standards-aligned grade level classes and athletic instruction. Beginning in third grade, students receive a weekly Olympic-style Taekwondo classes led by Master Smith, a certified master instructor holding a fifth degree black belt from the World Taekwondo Federation.
Middle School (5th-8th Grade) physical education options include opportunities to participate in individual and team competitive sports offered by the school in association with selected sports organizations. Students may choose from any current offering or arrange for independent physical education with approval from the school.
Encinitas Country Day School is a member of the Independent Middle School League (IMSL) along with 4 other area schools. The school league competes in three seasons; Fall, Winter, and Spring, in both boys and girls sports.

Middle School students are offered options to learn how the game of golf, receive dance instruction, participate in interscholastic athletics and arrange for independent physical education that meets standards and offers age-appropriate fitness and athletic training to support our maturing students’ interests.
ECDS has the only “on-site” golf program in San Diego County. Offered exclusively to its students by Scholastic Junior Golf, it features special safe foam golf balls, driving range, chipping area and state of the art putting mats. The program affords the opportunity for each student to develop self-respect through the learning of golf’s basic concepts of integrity, honesty, responsibility and caring for others. These special classes teach life skills of golf to students together with receiving instruction in putting, chipping, full swing and mental preparation.
Parents have open-ended options on attending both the class and practice sessions.
